Watching tv on Friday I came across this commercial at least five times in two hours. I never really pay attention to commercials but this one struck my attention. Probably because I love Christmas and the commercial is Christmas themed or because I love NBA basketball and Lebron James was in the advertisement. This commercial uses the advertising technique of testimonial because it uses a famous person to help sell their brand, in this case, it is Lebron James. Lebron James is shown with another famous person who is the face of intel, Jim Parson, who is from the Big Bang Theory. Jim Parson is the ghost from Christmas future, who shows James what his family will look like if he does not buy them a new computer from Intel. It shows his family having electronics that does not work without a computer from Intel and the whole family looks confused and disappointed. This commercial shows what a stereotypical Christmas morning looks like.
A stereotypical Christmas morning is one with a good sized family, with kids opening presents the parents sitting on the couch drinking coffee, snow outside, and with the house that has lots of decorations. In this case, the family is a black family which can imply that Intel wants to tell everyone that no matter what color of skin you have you can buy their product and you will have a big house, a big family, and lots of money to buy your kids the newest technology there is. It also shows Lebron James wrapping the presents which pull away from the stereotype that the moms wrap the presents. They imply that the dad does the shopping for the present and has all the money for the presents when in reality that is not true it depends on the household. Moms may wrap the presents and buy the gifts or the other way around or both parents split the job of buying presents and the job of wrapping them as well.
The Intel commercial appeals to anyone, mostly male parents that have to buy presents for their kids for Christmas. It causes those who this commercial is meant for to think I have to get them a laptop from Intel or else they will not be happy on Christmas when they open their presents. Every parent, for the most part, wants to be the best parent in their kids' eyes and Intel causes them to think their kids will not like them as much if they are not given a laptop from Intel.
